Course Overview

The need for performance improvement arises from the following pressures:

  • Poor performance: Employees do not achieve their objectives
  • Changes in the organization
  • Increased expectations from customers or management

A common reaction of management is to use training as a panacea.

However, is training always the appropriate course of action?

Following are some causes for under performance:

  • Flawed reward and incentive system
  • Poor communication
  • Poor equipment and facilities
  • Complicated organizational structure
  • Employees lack motivation
  • Employees’ ability is incompatible with the task
  • Employees lack the required knowledge and skills

Training is the most appropriate solution to a lack of knowledge and skills.

Upon receiving a request for training from a department or in response to an individual request, the responsible person should analyze the organizational context to identify the cause of performance. If the cause is a lack of skills and knowledge, training is required. If not, training is not the appropriate solution.
